Underwater Deep Dive to an Ocean of Wildlife Humor

Summer is the right time to be jealous of aquatic animals and their perpetual underwater cool.

I'm currently working from abroad, from a European country that's much cooler than my place of origin, and let me tell you - the summer air is literally different here. Sure, people all over the world live similarly - houses, gardens, grocery stores, parks, cars, and whatnot - but the air has an actual different quality from place to place on this planet. And it's extra apparent during summertime. Specifically for me, because I prefer the winter's chill over summer's scorching heat. So when summer is much more forgiving than what I'm used to, I definitely feel it.

Where I'm staying, I enjoy a chill summer wind, tolerable degrees in the shade, and an occasional pool visit. But the other day in the pool, I had a thought - are the waters different for aquatic animals just as I feel the air is different in another part of the world? Take the great white shark, for example - they're the shark species that's documented going on the longest migration journeys on Earth. Or, rather, below Earth's oceans. Individual great whites have traveled over 20,000 kilometers (12,400 miles) across entire ocean basins. Such as a famous shark named Nicole that swam from South Africa to Australia and back in just nine months - do you think she was all like "Huh, Australia's water is much nicer during this season"?

These thoughts that caught me so off guard in the pool made me stop in the middle of it, and I nearly forgot to float there for a second. The fact that my head was already half underwater shook me "awake" from wondering, and I got all the inspiration I needed for another animalistic meme batch - of all the wonderful wildlife that lives underwater.

  • Hey there, fellow animal fans! I pop in once more to give you a splash of underwater animal trivia that I really like:

    Mantis shrimp can throw a punch so fast it boils the water around it, creating a flash of light hot enough to rival the sun's surface - all from a creature smaller than your hand.

    Octopuses run on three hearts and blue veins, and two of those hearts actually stop beating mid-swim, which might explain why they'd rather stay home.

    Immortal jellyfish can hit reset on their own aging, technically making them biologically ageless.

    Anglerfish light up their own personal lure to bait prey in the pitch-black deep sea, basically fishing with a built-in flashlight.

    And seahorse dads carry every single fetus themselves. Down here, the rulebook clearly got tossed overboard.
